The first semi-autonomous Albanian polity was formed in 1190, when archon Progon of Kruja established the Principality of Arbanon with the capital in Krujë within the Byzantine Empire. 13세기에 비잔티움 제국 과 불가리아 제2제국 의 국력이 약해지자, 알바니아의 일부분이 세르비아 대공국 의 침략을 받기도 하였다.
